Affording Hillel

Each year we have conversations with prospective parents who say, “Oh, we cannot afford Hillel.” When we mention our generous tuition assistance program, they say, “Yes, but we assume we would not qualify for aid.” Often, these parents find they are mistaken.
Hillel Day School strongly believes in making Hillel affordable for all families wishing to give their child a Jewish education. An important hallmark of our school is our commitment to making the school financially accessible. For the 2024-2025 school year, Hillel allocated more than $4.2 million in tuition assistance to 65% of the student body.

Understanding the financial commitments associated with education, Hillel’s Affordability Program for kindergarten through eighth-grade makes Hillel more attainable for eligible families and ensures predictability, transparency, and fairness. The program clearly outlines eligibility criteria and processes available to qualifying families and each family’s tuition is individually determined based on their adjusted gross income (AGI) and several other factors, including family size, number of children attending Hillel or other tuition-based schools (including college), and other liabilities and assets. Tuition is based on a family’s financial resources, regardless of how many children are enrolled in the school. For example, a family with one student enrolled may pay $7,000 in tuition. Tuition will not double when a second child is enrolled but will stay within affordability.

We aim to ensure that financial considerations do not hinder access to the exceptional education and nurturing environment offered by our school and encourage families to apply. The value of a Hillel education resides in the small class sizes, the quality and passion of our faculty and the relationships formed with students, the innovative design of our curriculum and campus, the Jewish values woven throughout the educational experience, and the safety and success of every student.

  • Minimum tuition that a family will incur is 20% of full tuition
  • Barring a +/- 10% change in AGI over a 3-year cumulative period, the tuition award will be substantially the same as the prior year, subject to tuition increases.
  • Current Hillel families receiving tuition assistance prior to the 2024-2025 school year are grandfathered into their current award, provided, however, the +/- 10% change in AGI trigger to re-evaluate a family’s award is expanded to a 3-year cumulative change of +/- 10% (i.e., 3 consecutive annual increases of 4% would trigger a re-evaluation).
Best said by one of our parents, “No one can take an education away from you.” Tuition is an investment in your child’s future.

  • Tuition Assistance

Kindergarten-through-eighth grade families must apply online for financial aid. Unfortunately, Hillel does not offer tuition assistance for its Early Childhood Center. We encourage families to contact our Chief Operating Officer, John Pitcher to learn more about the Tuition Assistance process.

Eligible families need only apply once for tuition assistance. Subsequently, the only requirement is to submit annual tax returns. As long as income does not change more than ten percent in either direction, the award will remain relatively the same and tuition will only adjust to reflect the annual percentage increase of tuition. This increase is based on the tuition a family is paying, and will not be based on the dollar amount of the percentage increase on full tuition.

Hillel safeguards the confidentiality of all financial information supplied by applicants and does not publicly identify recipients of financial aid. Only those persons directly involved in the financial aid process review this information.

Elana Burnstein

I send my kids to Hillel for many reasons. They are educated in their faith, their soul, and their hearts as Jews there. I have no time, nor do I have the resources, to provide for them what Hillel does. No more Hebrew school or Sunday school.  My girls are definitely Jewish because of Hillel. I thank God every day for the opportunity to be a parent of a Hillel child. Please, before anyone says it's too expensive, you have no idea the options until you investigate. I can't afford NOT to be there.
