For those students participating in our school dining program, we offer high-quality dishes made from fresh, seasonal ingredients by our in-house chef. Menus rotate on a monthly basis and feature an entree and healthy sides each day prepared and delivered safely to students by our food services team during the pandemic. A sandwich is offered daily. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are also available. The lunch program is nut-free. Our meat and dairy kitchens are supervised by the Council of Orthodox RABBIS of GREATER DETROIT, and all food is strictly kosher.
For others who bring a lunch from home, only dairy or pareve food may be brought into school. On Wednesdays and Fridays, meat is served to those participating in our lunch program; otherwise, Hillel is meat-free. (Note: according to Jewish law, fish is not considered meat, so kosher fish such as tuna and salmon are always allowed).
All packaged food must be certified kosher; therefore, when shopping, please make sure packaged food and prepared food bears a kosher symbol. A list of such symbols may be found
here.
Our standards are meant to ensure that every student and family affiliated with Hillel feels comfortable and welcome in our
miznon (cafe). We hope this atmosphere or respect helps students to perform mitzvot, and thus deepen their relationship with God. Therefore, we ask Hillel families, regardless of personal practice, to abide by our standard of kashrut.
